I think it's interesting that so much is known about Muhammad, yet not very many westerners know a lot about him or Islam. Obviously, there is not an enormous amount of Muslims here, but it is one of the largest religions in the world. Religion courses aren't typically required at most schools, but given the fear associated with this religion, don't you think it would be wise to learn more about it? Should schools make religion classes necessary-- if only so kids will not be so ignorant about other cultures?
I think that schools should make learning about other religions necessary. this will give kids a different perspective towards a religion than what the media/parents say. They need to learn not in depth but just basically about their founders and what they wanted. It shouldn't be all theologically but it shouldn't also be all historical
ReplyDeleteI agree, it would be a great idea, especially in the world we live in today; in an increasingly globalized world, having knowledge of other religions and cultures is essential to creating a society in which even the most polarizing ideologies coexist and tolerate one another.
ReplyDeletePart of the hesitancy about teaching religion in schools is the separation of church and state (prohibition on prayer in schools, etc.). Of course, one can perfectly well study religions academically (as we are doing) without advocating for any particular religious teachings over others, but still the whole idea makes a lot of people squirm, and public schools especially are sensitive to such squirming. Plus lots of parents actually don't want their children exposed to other religions, fearing they may convert, or just ask awkward questions.
