Goddesses

As crazy as it sounds, I have never realized the irony of cultures that worship female goddesses, yet disrespect women.  We talked in class about how this is really just a way to ease the guilt-- we don't hate women, we worship a female, she just deserved to get beaten.  These goddesses must be the ideal woman: something that every female strived to be, and then got looked down upon when she was not.
What are your thoughts on this?

  1. I seriously also do not understand that but I think the idea of easing their guilt is one way and also that maybe they know how much women can accomplish and they get intimidated. that's all I can think of.

  2. I would agree, easing guilt seems to be one way of looking at it. I also think that objectifying women can lead to both idolatry and chauvinistic abuse. I think it was quite possible that this seemingly paradoxical treatment of women seemed perfectly normal to those which partook of it.

  3. Also, men may have acted this way because of their fear of anything different. If a woman became a more powerful figure in the household, the men would feel threatened by this change. Today, it's almost the norm to have woman as powerful as men, almost.

  4. I believe that the system is set up to encourage all of these aspects. These societies worship a female, and hold her as the ideal. Then in their family life they beat women and disrespect them because it is impossible for them to live up to the ideal of the goddess. This way they can ease their guilt and maintain control over everything in their lives.
